About the Provider

Dr. Stempel cares for women during pregnancy and throughout their lives. He specializes in minimally invasive surgery (MIS), including traditional and robotic laparoscopy. He was one of the first OB/GYN surgeons in Portland to develop and perform laparoscopic supercervical hysterectomy in the mid-90s, a break-through in MIS. For the past 16 years, Dr. Stempel has led annual surgical trips to Guatemala, where he performs surgery to correct pelvic organ prolapse among a population of women who are at a far greater risk of developing the condition. This experience has enabled him to develop advanced skills, particularly in the area of vaginal approach surgery, which is the least invasive approach to gynecological surgery.

Dr. Stempel is part of WHA’s urogynecology team specializing in the evaluation and treatment of pelvic floor dysfunction, particularly stress and urge incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. In this area of his practice, Dr. Stempel sees women experiencing:

  • Leakage of urine with coughing, sneezing, lifting, running or jumping.
  • Difficulty making it to the bathroom in time, having to urinate frequently, or getting up at night to urinate frequently.
  • Pain with a full bladder or pain urinating.
  • A bulge at the opening of the vagina.
  • Trouble emptying the bladder or having a bowel movement.
  • Pelvic pressure.

After a consultation and evaluation, Dr. Stempel works with women experiencing these symptoms to decide on a solution that best meets their needs, considering their lifestyle, health goals, cost of treatment and anticipated results. Solutions may include physical therapy, lifestyle changes, medication, or surgical procedures, such as transvaginal slings to correct stress incontinence, robotic mesh suspension to correct prolapse, prolapse repairs performed vaginally, or one of the latest developments in prolapse surgery: the transvaginal mesh kit.

Is there anything else you would like to share about your experience with your provider?

Dr Stempel has been my ob/gyn for years. I have some rather complicated medical issues, including some gyn issues. I appreciate his consistent care and concern for my health. He explains what he's doing during examinations, the thought process behind his recommendations, and routinely includes me in the decision making process. I feel very comfortable with him. I am grateful for his commitment to be an important part of my medical team.

Is there anything else you would like to share about your experience with your provider?

I cannot express in words how great of an experience I had with Dr. Stempel. I was nervous to have a male doctor, but he was a pro. He was genuine, down to earth, knowledgeable, helpful, direct, and eager to help. It?s rare that I have had such an outstanding experience with a care provider. I left feeling happy, in a not so happy medical situation. He deserves an award!

I've been a patient of Dr. Stempel and Women's Healthcare for many years. I live on the other side of town, but the drive is well worth it because of the excellent care.
