She/her
Nurse-Midwife
Obstetrics and Gynecology
Ashley Ulmer is a certified nurse-midwife at Women's Healthcare Associates' Midwifery Birth Center in Portland, Oregon.
"My own birth experiences have taught me so much about who I am at my core but also of who I am in those powerful, fleeting and fiery moments surrounding labor and birth. I have had the personal experiences of homebirth, waterbirth and of being a surrogate mother. I consider it a privilege and honor to partner with people on their journey through pregnancy and birth. My approach and aim is to flex to the needs of each person by providing knowledge and expertise – as well as to simply hold space and listen."
From her very first experience as an 18-year-old birth assistant assigned the job of video recorder, Ashley has been awestruck by the energy and grace of birth and drawn to the honor of being present and grounded during such a sacred time. In addition to her experience working as a hospital-based midwife, she has also worked in free-standing birth centers in Tennessee, Florida and Washington State—and appreciates the ability to offer birthing people the safety and security of collaborative, evidence-based midwifery care—together with the quiet focus and creature comforts that are hallmarks of community birth centers. Ashley is well experienced in water birth and is passionate about supporting lactation, perinatal mental health and family planning.
Ashley has embraced anti-racist study personally and is interested in building a more equitable and inclusive community through midwifery. She enjoys experimenting in the kitchen, preparing meals for family and friends and sewing projects when she’s not busy with her two children.
