Portland Lettuce Recall Important News for Pregnant Women

May 23, 2012

The FDA announced yesterday that a Portland produce distribution company has issued a voluntary recall of bagged lettuce and other products. There is some suspicion that the lettuce could be contaminated with Listeria. Listeria is a bacteria that can cause a foodborne illness called Listeriosis. It is particularly important for pregnant women because they are more susceptible to the disease than other healthy adults, as are fetuses and newborn babies.

Symptoms of Listeriosis include fever, stiff neck, confusion, weakness and vomiting, sometimes preceded by diarrhea. Visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for more information on listeria and pregnancy.
