Out-of-Hospital Birth

Is a birth center right for you?

There are many wonderful ways to bring a baby into this world. For some, a low-intervention, unmedicated birth feels right. Laboring in a familiar setting surrounded by a dedicated, supportive team can make all the difference. Where might one find such an awesome place? We were hoping you’d ask…

WHA's Midwifery Birth Center

Gateway - Portland, Oregon

WHA’s Midwifery Birth Center provides an alternative to hospital birth for healthy people at a low risk of developing pregnancy or childbirth complications. And a pretty sweet alternative, too. Here are a few of the things that set our Midwifery Birth Center apart from other out-of-hospital options:

  • First of all, our facility is covered in-network by many health insurance plans, including CareOregon. (Insert audible sigh of relief here.)
  • The Midwifery Birth Center gives you easy and seamless access to all the services offered by WHA, including prenatal genetic screening and ultrasound.
  • Your care will be led by our team of certified nurse-midwives who believe in your ability to birth your baby naturally, but have the medical training and tools close at hand if the need arises—because who doesn’t love getting the best of both worlds? If you want or need to transfer to a hospital during labor, one of WHA’s hospital-based nurse-midwives or will be there to meet you.
  • Our Midwifery Birth Center team is supported by on-site WHA physicians who are available to consult on your care at any point. If you need to transfer to a physician’s care during labor, our physicians will be ready and waiting for you at the nearby Providence Portland Medical Center.

Ideally, your care at the Midwifery Birth Center starts early in your pregnancy so we can begin to evaluate and monitor the health of you and your baby to make sure out-of-hospital birth is a safe option for you. However, if you’re further along and considering out-of-hospital birth, we would love to talk to you! Basically, no matter where you are in the pregnancy process, we’re here to help.
