Other Services
Women's Healthcare Associates offers services beyond general gynecological and obstetrical care. Please click on any of the following topics for more information.
Bone Density Testing
Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones become fragile and more likely to break. This
health risk affects one in two women 50 years of age and older. If left untreated or not prevented, osteoporosis may progress painlessly until a fracture occurs, typically in the hip, spine or wrist. This condition is responsible for more than 1.5 million fractures annually. Osteoporosis can be detected by a painless, non-invasive bone density test, an exam that measures the mineral content in your bones.
Your Women's Healthcare Associates clinician will help you determine when your risk factors indicate you should be screened. Some of the risk factors are:
- Menopause / Removal of Ovaries
- Personal or Family History of Fracture or Osteoporosis
- Weight under 130 pounds
- Any Tobacco use or Excessive Alcohol use
We are committed to offering the highest-quality bone density services available. Our staff follows a rigorous quality control program to ensure accuracy and quality of care for each patient. In addition, all clinicians who interpret bone density scans are certified by the International Society of Clinical Densitometry and participate in regular continuing medical education.
Bone density testing is offered at our Peterkort North office. Please consult with your Women’s Healthcare Associates clinician if you are interested in making an appointment for a bone density scan. For more information on osteoporosis and bone density testing, visit the National Osteoporosis Foundation.
Childbirth Education Classes
Childbirth is an amazing, magical experience – and one that comes with many unknowns. To help our patients successfully navigate through pregnancy and the birthing process, Women’s Healthcare Associates offers a four-week childbirth education series at our Peterkort and Tualatin campuses. The program covers all aspects of the birthing process, including pertinent anatomy and physiology of labor and delivery, labor coping skills, and medications and epidurals. By the end of the series, you and your birth partner will have a good understanding of the labor and birth process, and will be able to develop a birth plan based upon your needs.
Childbirth education classes are open to all Women’s Healthcare Associates patients. Please contact your clinician’s office for class schedules and enrollment information.
Mammography
Mammography is the best screening tool available for breast cancer. It can find cancers at an early stage, when they are small and more responsive to treatment.
Screening mammography services are available at our Peterkort North office. We contract with a group of local radiologists, specializing in breast imaging services, to read our mammograms. The mammograms are
read independently by two radiologists, and then scanned digitally into a Computer Aided Detection (CAD) system to confirm their findings. The CAD system is very sensitive and able to detect small abnormalities, which is important for early detection. Early detection of breast cancer is critical. Using this system in conjunction with two independent evaluations by radiologists provides the most accurate breast cancer screening available.
For more information on breast cancer, visit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
Ultrasound
Ultrasound uses highly sophisticated equipment to produce continuous real-time images by emitting sound waves into the body. These sound waves are produced by a smooth probe placed either on the abdomen or in some cases in the vagina. The sound waves are then reflected back to the probe, analyzed by a computer, and the images are displayed on a monitor screen. Typically, light pressure is the only sensation felt during the examination.
Ultrasound is used in obstetrics to examine multiple aspects of a pregnancy including the fetus, placenta, and amniotic fluid.
Fetal measurements are used to determine the size of your baby and in some cases the age of the pregnancy. Some major birth defects can be detected by ultrasound, however the science is not perfect and the ultrasound findings may not exactly match with the findings at birth. No harmful effects of ultrasound to either you or your baby have been identified with appropriate use of this technology over the past fifty years.
Ultrasound is used in gynecology to examine the pelvic organs such as the uterus, ovaries, and cervix. This additional information can help your provider in the diagnoses of specific gynecologic conditions.
Ultrasound is offered at our Northwest Perinatal, Newberg, Peterkort North, Peterkort South, and Tualatin offices.
