Congratulations to Providence Newberg Medical Center on "Baby Friendly" Designation

Jan 25, 2011

Providence Newberg Medical Center is one of just 104* hospitals throughout the United States that have received the "Baby Friendly" designation under the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

The global BFHI and its U.S. authority, Baby-Friendly USA, were created to encourage and recognize hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care and support for infant feeding. The programs assist hospitals in giving mothers the information, confidence and skills needed to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding their babies or feeding formula safely, and gives special recognition to hospitals that have done so. The honor for Providence Newberg was announced last Friday in Washington DC during a summit with the U.S. Surgeon General who recently released a “Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding.”
