ACOG Urges Pregnant Women to Get the Flu Vaccine

Sep 21, 2010

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that all women who are pregnant during flu season (October through May in the United States) receive inactivated influenza vaccine, regardless of their stage of pregnancy. This is according to new recommendations published in the October 2010 issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology, ACOG's monthly journal.

According to ACOG, "influenza vaccination is an essential element of prenatal care because pregnant women are at an increased risk of serious illness due to influenza." The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention join ACOG in this recommendation.
